January 2012
Without the support from Trafford Centre for Independent Living I do not know where I would be now. Their help and support came at a time when I was feeling vulnerable and was in a depressed state. After a year of struggling physically with pain and limited mobility I was finally diagnosed with Osteoarthritis. My next battle was to secure adaptations and support to enable me to live an independent lifestyle again. I was able to do this with the support of Sue Hopwood. Not only was she a brilliant Advocate, she also gave me her time, understanding and believed in what I was going through.
When I received my first reply form the DWP turning down my application for Disability Living Allowance Sue was there to pick up the pieces and supported me in making a further application. Due to the time and effort she put in to support me my second application was successful and has enabled me to purchase items which will assist me to begin to lead a more comfortable and independent lifestyle, which I hope will help me regain some mobility. Trafford Centre for Independent Living, and especially Sue, have my heartfelt gratitude, because without her belief and support I would still be living in isolation and suffering and for her help I am eternally grateful.

November 2011
A few months ago, I called into the CIL to see how things were progressing since the closure of St. Giles. I was introduced to Charlotte, Support Broker and we arranged to meet a few weeks later to discuss ways in which my Personal Budget could be spent more creatively. Although my weeks were busy with my volunteering at the Imperial War Museum and being a founder of the ‘Our Independence’ group, I wanted to see what else was out there, and get some inspiration to broaden my horizons.
Over several conversations – Charlotte was always interested to know what interested me, and at one point I mentioned in passing that I was interested in singing. Following this, Charlotte provided me with some information from the CIL about a choir that meets at the Cinnamon Club. I was a little unsure at first, but thought I’d give it a try, I had nothing to lose!
After attending a choir practice I received a phone call from a vocal coach – the choir conductor had told her about me. She asked me how I would feel about taking up private singing lessons! At first, I was taken aback, but after thinking about it – I wanted to give it a go. I now have fortnightly lessons, and I’m thoroughly enjoying them. My favourite style of music to sing is Swing, and not only has my singing improved but my speech has too – I feel it is more controlled which I’m so happy about.
I hope my new passion continues to grow and new experiences with it. Thanks CIL!
