Connect Project

Provides support within the community to people who are in recovery, or who are working towards making a positive change regarding use, of drugs and alcohol.

What is the Connect Project?

It is a project focused on helping people to enjoy experiences not linked with misuse of alcohol or drugs. Individuals are encouraged to achieve and maintain abstinence.

This aim is supported by matching clients with a trained volunteer and or accessing group activities.

Training volunteer and groups help clients in:

  • Connecting with another person;
  • Connecting with groups or people;
  • Connecting with an individual’s interests;
  • Connecting with a client’s health;
  • Connecting with an individual’s skills;
  • Achieving greater self-awareness.

Our idea is:

To support clients in helping themselves to develop their own options or decisions. Also, to help clients look at options, to move from merely existing, to living their life for the better.

What does the Connect Project need from clients?

A commitment to meet with the Connect co-ordinator and a volunteer;
A belief or feeling that this project could help in making a difference;
To be serious about being ready to try and attempt changing their life;
To be available for three months.

Behaviour

Both volunteers and clients are subject to understanding that the supportive relationship will not support certain types of behaviour, which are not acceptable to their role, for example:

  • Violence toward or by the volunteers, or towards others;
  • Discriminatory language or behaviour by clients or by the volunteers;
  • Discussion that admits to present involvement in criminal activity.

What support is available?

It can take time for two people who have never met one other before to achieve rapport. Both volunteers and clients have the right to end their contract. However, this should only be undertaken after contacting the Connect co-ordinator.

Whilst not all volunteers have had personal problems with drugs, alcohol or mental health, they will be provided with continuous training in drug, alcohol, and mental health issues and should be sensitive to clients needs.

What’s in it for the client?

The many potential benefits are:

  • Meeting people from different backgrounds,
  • Building up confidence,
  • Reducing feelings of boredom and isolation,
  • Helping to build a bridge to employment,
  • Develop activities or interests relevant to the client,
  • Clients can learn about themselves and experience new activities;
  • The Connect co-ordinator and volunteers will work with clients and, where possible, help them identify and support their social needs.
