Parking Guide for Disabled Badge Holders

Where can I park?

Badge holders can park free of charge without time limit at on-street pay and display parking spaces. The disabled badge must be correctly displayed.

Badge holders may usually park on single or double yellow lines for up to three hours if displaying the badge and clock (but see “Where can’t I park?”).

This does not apply where a loading ban is in force. Look for the plate, which tells you when the ban is in force and do not park at these times.

Disabled bays are also provided both on and off street for the exclusive use of disabled badge holders.

Where can't I park?

A badge must not be used to park in any of the following places:

  • Where a loading ban is in force

  • Where there are double white lines in the centre of the road (even if one of the lines is a broken line)

  • In a bus lane during it’s hours of operation

  • In a cycle lane

  • On a clearway

  • On a pedestrian crossing area

  • In a bay marked for other types of vehicles, such as an ambulance, taxi or loading bay

  • In a residents only parking zone

  • On school “keep clear” markings

  • On a bay or area where parking has been suspended e.g. with cones

You should also avoid the following:

  •  Any place that might cause an obstruction or hold up traffic

  • Parking in a place that might block access for others

  • Parking on a pavement

Remember! The vehicle must be moved if a Police Officer or Parking Attendant in uniform requests it.

How do I use my badge and clock?

A badge must be clearly displayed in the front of the vehicle preferably on the dashboard.

It is important to display the badge the correct way up, i.e. with the wheelchair symbol and expiry date facing upwards so that the details can be clearly read. If the clock is required it should be set to the time of arrival and be clearly displayed alongside the badge. Please take care not to overlap the badge and clock hiding any details. Remember it is an offence to set an incorrect time or alter the clock once it has been set.

The badge should only ever be used when the person it was issued to is in the vehicle either as the driver or as a passenger being picked up or dropped off. It is a serious offence to use a badge without the disabled person being present.

Badges last for three years only – please make sure that your badge is renewed in good time. For advice on renewals telephone (0161) 912 2000.

Why is Trafford Council so keen to check these badges?

Parking spaces occupied by drivers who are misusing a badge are preventing genuine badge holders from parking in those spaces.

We will be particularly looking for people who:

  • Use stolen badges

  • Use badges without the disabled person being present

It is unfair to the genuine user that such people abuse the scheme. Trafford will do all it can to assist the genuine user alongside rigorous efforts to catch the abusers who cause discredit to the scheme.

We are not out to punish people who make genuine mistakes, to these people we issue advisory notices, which will hopefully help them to understand what is required in the future. We wish to catch people who risk spoiling the scheme for others by deliberately breaking the rules.

Deliberate misuse of disabled badges is a serious criminal offence and Trafford are keen to stamp out this misuse.
