Disability
Symbol
The Disability Symbol recognises the achievement of organisations in
recruiting and retaining disabled people. The symbol demonstrates to other
businesses and to customers the commitment of the organisation to making the
most of its employees.
To become a Disability Symbol user, an organisation has to agree to five
commitments, which are:
- To interview all disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for a
job vacancy and consider them on their abilities,
- To ensure there is a mechanism in place to discuss, at least once a year,
with disabled employees what the organisation can do to develop and use the
abilities of disabled staff,
- To make every effort when employees become disabled to ensure that they
stay in employment,
- To take action to make sure that all employees develop the appropriate
level of disability awareness required to make the organisations commitments
work,
- To review these five commitments each year and to identify what has been
achieved, to plan ways to improve them and inform employees and Jobcentre
Plus about the progress made and future plans.
