Employment Initiatives Delivered By the North West Disability Service

These initiatives are designed to help employers recruit, retrain and develop disabled employees.

Disability Employment Advisors

  • Help employers recruit from a caseload of job-ready disabled clients, with a wide range of skills, and who could be ideal,
  • Help employers to retain an employee who has become disabled or who is encountering practical difficulties in the workplace owing to an existing disability,
  • Can advise on the financial help available to recruit and retain disabled staff,
  • Are based locally in the Jobcentre Plus network.

Job Introduction Scheme

  • Allows employers to take on a person with a disability for a trial period of up to six weeks, by providing the employer with a subsidy of £75 per week for the trial period,
  • Gives the opportunity for the employer to access the applicant’s suitability for the job and solve any practical concerns,
  • Provides reassurance for employers, helping them to make sure that they employ the best person for the job,
  • The paperwork is simple and quick to complete.

Access to Work

  • Provides practical advice and financial assistance to help employers surmount the obstacles disabled people might meet in the workplace,
  • Is tailored to suit individuals’ particular needs in the workplace. This can include sign language communicators at interviews, support workers, help with special equipment and alterations to premises or a working environment to improve access,
  • Can help people in full or part-time paid employment, permanent or temporary or those who are about to start work.

Disability Symbol

  • Signing up to this symbol means giving a commitment to good practice in employing disabled people,
  • Assists employers to find the right person for the job by getting a wider choice of applicants,
  • Helps retain staff in employment and makes the most of employees,
  • Increases the profile of the company at no cost,
  • Demonstrates the company’s commitment to employees and disabled people, to the business community, customers and the public. Seven million of the buying public are disabled or have close links with disabled people. Research shows they want to deal with disability-aware companies.

Work Trials

  • Provides a chance to try out a potential employee in the workplace for between one and fifteen days,
  • Offers the potential employee a chance to prove they can do the job,
  • Requires no outlay by employers. Travel and meal allowances are met by Jobcentre Plus
  • Is usually for people who have been unemployed for six months or more, though people from certain groups may also be eligible, e.g., disabled people,
  • Could lead to further subsidies for the employer to ensure the workforce is fully trained.

New Deal

  • Can provide subsidies each week if you employ a New Deal Jobseeker,
  • Can give a significant financial contribution towards training,
  • Applies to disabled and non-disabled claimants of Jobseekers Allowance who meet eligibility criteria,
  • Fields a personal adviser who will help employers and employees with any queries.
