Trafford Libraries are multi- media resource centres. Members can borrow books, including large print books, video tapes, audio tapes, talking books, DVDs and CD ROMs.

Services for Disabled People Include:

  • CCTV readers to magnify text in Altrincham, Sale Stretford and Urmston Libraries
     
  • Talking Book Service, available by post, for people who are blind or visually impaired.
     
  • Home Library Service for people who are housebound and unable to visit libraries

The Visually Impaired People Unit is on the second floor of the Library.

Opening times are:
Monday to Saturday: 10.00 am - 12.30 pm and 1.30 - 5.00 pm

Services Offered

The VIP Unit provides a wide range of services and equipment to enable visually impaired and print disabled people to enjoy the benefits of Manchester’s comprehensive library services. These include:

Computers with internet access

All VIP service computers have access to the internet and Microsoft applications. They also have Jaws software to convert what happens on the monitor to synthesised speech, or Zoomtext to magnify the image on the monitor for visually impaired access.

Reading aids

CCTVs are available for high quality magnification and variable colour contrasts as well as Kurzweil 1000 and Kurzweil Reading Edge to convert print to synthetic speech.

Training

VIP Unit staff are available to give training on the use of any of the computer equipment or reading aids. Training is offered on a one-to-one basis and can be arranged for a mutually convenient time within our opening hours.

Information

The Unit provides public information in accessible formats and a collection of information on Visual Impairment issues. There is access to the Talking Newspaper Enterprises internet site, which offers access to a range of publications such as daily newspapers or weekly magazines via a synthetic speech or screen magnification. The Unityweb internet site is available to locate publications in accessible formats from public and specialist Visually Impaired libraries.
