Next Step is a free and confidential specialist guidance service working with people who have mental health problems, and are thinking about a new hobby or leisure interest, college, training, voluntary work or employment and want advice, support and on-going practical help.

Staff work with each client for as long as they need help and support. There is no time limit and clients are always told that Next Step is a resource to be used.

Services offered

Advice and information on jobs and careers, college courses, vocational training courses and qualifications.
Assessment of your skills, abilities, interests and work priorities
Counselling
Help and support with application forms, letters, interviews and visits to employers, benefit application and charges, finding child care
Advocacy and negotiation for speaking on behalf of clients to colleges, training providers and employers; helping to improve access to opportunities and helping clients to get discretionary grants and funding

We also:

Advise employers about funding and financial incentives to encourage them to employ our clients, or offer work experience and job search help
Help colleges and training providers to develop appropriate courses
Research the education and employment needs of mental health clients
Provide an equal opportunities service
Find our about sources of funding to improve our services
Work with existing employment schemes and relevant agencies
Provide a job search service tailored to the needs of clients
Have computer software, access to the internet and a careers library
Talk to user groups and key workers about developments in our work
