Trafford South Asian Mental Health Project
The South Asian Mental Health Project was created in April 1995 to work with
people experiencing mental ill health within the Pakistani, Gujrati, Sikh, Hindu
and Bangladeshi communities. The team can converse in Urdu, Punjabi, Gujrati and
Hindi. The project is community based, and located in Broome House, Stretford.
We provide the following service:
- One-to-one support for individuals experiencing mental ill health, such as
counseling, proving emotional and practical support, and advocacy.
- Support and information to carers and families of those experiencing
mental distress, such as information regarding diagnosis and medication and
access to Mental Health services.
- Cultural and linguistic interpretation and information about Asian ideas
of personhood, culture and belief systems to individuals, mental health
professionals and statutory health and voluntary sectors.
- Work with clients who have additional problems such as drug and alcohol
misuse.
- Help and advice concerning DSS, housing and disability issues.
