Disability Statement

North Trafford College is committed to the fair treatment of all and helping everyone to realise their maximum potential in their personal, social and professional lives regardless of gender, race, religion, age, sexual orientation, learning difficulty or disability. The college believes that all students should be provided with educational experiences of the highest possible quality.

Our aim is to work towards an inclusive learning environment by continually improving our provision in order that students can achieve their personal goals. The services and learning made available at this college are delivered in partnership with the students, on the basis of equality and inclusivity.

This statement is intended to reflect our commitment to partnership and equality of opportunity by providing students with information covering admission arrangements, support during the learning programme, educational facilities, complaints and appeals procedures, examination arrangements, accommodation and access.

This statement is seen by North Trafford Corporation (the governing body) as a starting point for review and development. We welcome comment and suggestions from any of our students or visitors on how we can improve our service delivery, facilities or accommodation.

Physical Accommodation and Access

The college has two sites, Talbot Road Centre, which is the main site and administrative centre of the college, and Moss Road Centre where engineering courses are located. Both sites are two storey buildings.

To help ensure the college meets its obligations under the Disability and Discrimination Act, a disabled person’s access audit has recently been undertaken. This audit will help the college provide the best possible independent access for disabled students with all types of impairment.

Talbot Road Centre

Classrooms, learning centres and the refectory are accessible by wheelchair via a ramp at the front entrance and lift to the first floor. Wheelchair lifts accessible by key are available to enable wheelchair users to reach the classrooms at the rear of the building and to reach the library. The main office issues keys.

There are toilets for use by disabled people on both floors.

Four car parking spaces for students with mobility problems are located near the front entrance of the building. Students who require access to disabled car parking spaces should contact the main office when they first join the college and a specialist pass will be issued.

Moss Road Centre

Classroom, learning centres and the refectory are available via a ramp at the front entrance and lift to the first floor. The lift is accessible with a key obtained from the main office.

At both centres there is a willingness to re-locate classrooms, whenever possible, to accommodate students with mobility problems.

If you have learning difficulties and/or a disability and are unsure of your course or if you are new to North Trafford College you will be interviewed and assessed by the appropriate Programme Manager and will be given guidance on the most suitable course to match your needs.

During the interview, your specific needs will be discussed and support will be arranged if it is consistent with the college’s expertise and facilities. A further interview will be arranged if necessary.

All potential students are encouraged to discuss their individual needs with college staff.

Learning Support Policy

Learning support is defined as support, which enhances the student’s ability, to learn and enables you to have access to the full curriculum.

All students at North Trafford College are entitled to receive learning support so that you may learn more efficiently, progress and achieve.

Learning support may be taken in the form of extra help with communications, language, number or be in the form of specific help if students have a physical disability or a learning difficulty.

Learning support may be provided through learning workshops, additional teacher support in class, small group work or through one-to-one support. Access to specialist equipment and the services of support staff will be made available as appropriate.

Each curriculum section in the college has a Learning Support Co-ordinator.

Equipment and Technological Support

The college continues to develop and maintain its specialist equipment and technical support. Currently we have the following available:

Tantric lapel microphones; Braille embosser; converser; rainbow robotron text reader; IC recorder; voice recognition software; large screen monitors; touch screen for Apple Mac; visual tracking/magnifying rulers/ VDU screen filters, keyboard/keyguard; joysticks/rollerballs, desktop trackballs/touch pads; Textphone facility – Talbot Road and Moss Road sites.

The college is able to provide technical support to customise support materials such as large print notes.

Staff Expertise

The college has considerable expertise in the teaching and support of students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities including supporting young people with emotional and behavioural difficulties. We also currently have expertise in teaching and supporting students with dyslexia.

The college has some expertise in the support of students with sensory and visual impairment. This has been limited to the support of individual students through individual learning programmes.

Examination Arrangements

Students who think they may have a difficulty relating to examinations should mention this to their Programme Manager as early as possible after the beginning of their course. We can generally make arrangements for students to undertake examinations in the most appropriate way.

Concessions may include:

  • extra time in examinations. This is normally 25% extra or 15 minutes for every hour of examination;
  • a reader to read the examination paper aloud to the candidate;
  • an amanuensis (personal reader and scribe) to read the paper and write the candidate’s answers at their direction;
  • a separate room with an invigilator;
  • a word processor to produce their answers;
  • the question paper may be put on audiotape, produced in large print or Braille or put on disk.

In the case of most examining boards, candidates who have a specific learning difficulty (dyslexia) must be assessed by an independent Educational Psychologist who can be contacted through the local education authority.

Candidates who were assessed elsewhere and allowed concessions in previous examinations are not automatically allowed concessions at any time. Any assessment must have been completed within the two years prior to examination.

Individual assessments, advice and details can be obtained from Programme Managers or the Examinations Officer.

Other Forms of Support

These can be:

  • personal care support, where appropriate, for students on vocational courses;
  • support of trained first aiders on both sites but college staff are not able to administer medication;
  • advice on welfare rights is available from the Welfare Rights Officers located in the Student Support Unit;
  • links with external organisations such as DIAL, RNID, Henshaws Society for Blind People, MENCAP, SCOPE that are able to give support as appropriate;
  • personal counselling by a trained counsellor;
  • the college refectories may be able to accommodate special dietary needs by arrangement.

Complaints and Appeals Procedures

The college has a formal complaints procedure, which is referred to in the College Charter and made known to all students at induction. A copy of the full procedure is also available in the college library.

Students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities are given appropriate support through the complaints procedure using an advocate if necessary. Contact Julia Kelly on (0161) 886 7070.

Complaints concerning the college’s disability statement should be made through the college’s complaints procedure.
